Next America's Cup

A couple of weeks ago now, but Britannia (1st UK boat built to new AC75 rule out of 2 allowed) took flight

I haven't looked for a while but there was fear only three teams would be competing, have more confirmed now ?
The areas being used for racing will allow good viewing, unlike last time NZ hosted where you had to be out at sea to view IIRC.

I have to say, I think the foils look hideous. A shame they’ve gone away from multihulls IMO.

Sorry Dis but I think that’s beautiful. Echoes of J class but with 21st century speed.

If it wasn’t so very far away I’d love to see them. Perhaps when there are training runs in the Solent....

I like them but when they’re up, it’s not really sailing to my mind. Amazing things though and look forward to watching some of the racing.

I’ve probably mentioned it before but I’ve seen the smaller AC45 foiling around the Solent a while ago and the speed they do is just bizarre. It doesn’t look right. Goodness only knows how fast the 75 footer is.

I don’t see the J class there I’m afraid...wing and hull look nice but those awful bolted-on foils...ugh!

Not that I’m against foiling - absolutely love the look of the last ones and the Sail GP boats but these don’t do it for me.

More video. Showing a foiling tack. Which is an important step

How high can you go?
Well not this high

Video of this and the resultant capsize at

(In fact they don't want to go high, just out of the water is fastest, not entirely clear what went wrong on board ETNZ that she went that high)

Not actually the AC, but SailGP/GP50 which is a spin-off from the last round of AC. Ben's team are in that this year too

  • SPOILER: Mouse over to reveal
    • Comprehensive sweep on day 1 of the first event, 3 wins from 3

A minority interest I know, but there are a few sailors on here

I actually prefer the Sail GP I think. Last year’s was properly exciting and I love that they race in Hudson etc

Agreed. I’m just about to start catching up Day 2. Old Ben had a smasher on day 1!

And on Day 2 it seems! Well played.

Ultimately a slightly disappointing match race after Slingsby pissed up the pre-start. Never really in contention after.

Day 2 as a whole was an anti-climax really. The addition of Goobs has made his crew very strong. Bodes well for the rest of sailgp and the AC.
Just needs a decent design for the ac, but worrying reports that they have only had 15 days sailing on them AC boat 1. Suggests some sort of problem

Yeah, could they just be a bit over-engineered? It’s a lot of boat to hang on a wee foil...

I dunno, I think I like monohulls to just be monohulls. I think foiling suits multi hills boats better as they look the part.

Right, as we all know boats that use sails and not engines are just silly and rather pointless, but that does look quite impressive.

You'd have to spend quite a lot of money on a powerboat to keep up with it when there is a decent wind- it does over 50kts (about 60mph).

Though admittedly they are spending more than quite a lot to get it like that

Imagine trying to judge whether you are crossing when there are a couple of those racing

For those who don't sail, in sailing races, racing yachts zig-zag upwind and downwind (if the latter surprises you, not that these boats will be goking up to 3x the speed of the wind). So when they have the wind from opposite sides, the one with the wind coming from the starboard (right hand) side has right of way.
So they are 2 semi-flying monsters of carbon fibre, approaching each other at 50kts and the one without right of way has to judge whether he can get across cleanly. Give way when you don't need to and you are behind the other boat, don't give way when you need to and ....

And to make it even better, the visibility on those things isn't great. The mainsail sweeps the deck for efficiency, so you can't see under it. You can't easily (possibly at all) change sides.

In most types of yacht racing you would happily judge down to less than a metre. I think they may need leave a bigger margin in those

Why do they all have to be black? Can't we have some nicely coloured boats that actually stand out from the water, visually as well as physically?

Same is true for all sports these days. Employ some graphic designers FFS!

There are some good reasons for black actually. Firstly carbon fibre is black and whilst it can be covered it does tend to show through light colours making them look grubby.
More importantly there is a lot of effort to disguise the shapes. Actually covering them or hiding them is against the rules this time, so they use colouring to disguise the shape. If.you look at the Brit boat 2 to there is a pattern all over the underneath to disguise some parts. And generally black disguises the shape better than a uniform light or bright colour.

Lastly, this class actually look good in black, unlike most traditional yachts
