Tell me what car I should get

General car gossip.

Tell me what car I should get

Post by S1K @ Fri Oct 04, 2019 8:55 pm

I live 30 miles from work, mostly dual carriageway and motorway, so I’m commuting 300 miles a week. My budget isn’t massive, maybe £7000-8000 at the very most. Petrol preferred because I drive lorries all day so don’t really want my car to be a lorry too.

I can’t decide if I want another hot hatch like the Golf GTI’s I’ve had in the past and the Leon I have now or if I want a relaxing cruiser, like an X350 Jaguar XJ which is very tempting, or whether I should get a little sports car like an MX5. The car I get will have to be able to do an easy 100 - 120 mph on the motorway. Not tempted by SUV’s.

At the moment I’m just trying to come up with some ideas which are less predictable than a 3 series so has anyone got any ideas?

120 on the motorway? Isn’t your licence important to you, given your job?

It is, and I do make sure I’ve had a very good look around before I put my foot down.

For DC/M-way commuter miles I like comfort, refinement, and ideally a bit of power on tap. So an MX5 couldn't be less suited.

I'd look at a barge of some sort, maybe even a big V8 like an LS though I imagine the fuel bills would start to grate pretty quickly.

Audi TT mk 1 3.2. And you’ll have some change from your budget.

Or maybe a leggy mk 5 Golf GTi. Finding an unmolested one is the trick there.

Nissan 350Z or a 370Z if they're in budget.

Older 6 series BMW?

You cannot do 100+ on a motorway these days without sticking out like a sore thumb. I cannot conceive why you'd want to gamble your livelihood on going at best 25% faster (for a short while until you hit more traffic). But you do you.

Get something comfy and quiet, with a good radio and heated seats/steering wheel. Forget performance, it's largely irrelevant when commuting. Get an estate, so you can take lots of rubbish to the tip. And put the dogs in the boot.

Caveat: I am old, and my car-choosing criteria have shifted accordingly.

Buy my Supercharged Range Rover, it’s well lush and I’ll do you a stupid good deal on it.

(I’m dreading selling it, some of the people/questions I had to deal with selling the 550 made putting a match to it seem preferable)

Buy a Golf and keep the change.

Oh and you have several unmarked plod in your area so "having a good look" is pointless.

Given all the comments on here about driving too fast, from people whose opinions, believe it or not, I do value it’s clear that I do need to reconsider how I’ve been driving. Thanks.

Sorry Deuts but having floated the idea of buying your Range Rover with some family members and having frantically tried to do some very creative man maths to justify it I really don’t think it’s a goer. So fcuking tempted though.

I remember there being a thread on PH South Wales about unmarked plodcars. The variety of makes and colours makes scary reading.

Have you considered a barge, given that most of your mileage is motorway

Still one of the best cars Ive owned

Thanks TT, I was actually thinking of exactly that car as I was looking at a Passat on the motorway yesterday. My only concern is that running costs might be high given that it’s such a rare beast.

I don't remember it being, although nothing much went wrong for me.
Servicing and stuff was normal price, for sure.

I’ve put a deposit on a car (not like that) and I’m going to look at it next Saturday and I’m quite excited about it. In true CTF form it doesn’t comply with the criteria I set myself because it’s a diesel. It’s probably not massively exciting to anyone else being as it’s a 2012 Mercedes C220 CDI Sport but I have had my car for about eight or nine years so it’ll be quite a novelty for me. Should save about £30 a week in fuel too.

Great stuff!

In related news, I've sold the SCRR to a mystery buyer on CTF - will they reveal themselves?

The answer may surprise you!

Disappointingly I know at least one of the people who didn't buy it :(

Oh come on, this'll be easy to work out. Everybody who hasn't bought it just say "It wasn't me", and when everyone bar one has said "It wasn't me" we'll be able to point at that someone and say "It was you". It'll be like a remedial episode of Sherlock Holmes.

So, it wasn't me.
