Some words - cars

General car gossip.

Actually......I nicked the steering wheel from an old Maserati years ago, re-coloured it as the centre was baby-shit-brown and found a decent Merc badge for it. But it's identical to some that came on the Carat Duchalet Mercs and Lorinser type mercs.

I’d say that the W140 and R129 were the last of the bank vault Mercs. The second gen W140 though, once they worked out that biodegradable wiring looms weren’t a good idea. The W124 is a lovely car though but needs special attention to the front arches or they WILL rust.

I found a 145 cloverleaf on Facebook for a daft low price. No real description, but a few decent pics and has an mot so can't be all that bad. I jumped on it straight away and then arranged to get it collected on Friday. The response on FB was usual.....'Why'd you sell it before I got to ask you any questions' etc...his response was ' Guy realised it was a bloody bargain and bought it blind without any stupid questions....at this price that's how it's done!'
Now I hope it's not a fcuking nail as three cars I bought private this month have since been scrapped due to lying mofo sellers. One Vauxhall Astra SXi with 80 K miles...' Yeah just needs a coil spring and oil leak fixing' the motor expired the next day. Volvo V50 1.8 estate...'I stopped using it due to the lockdown and now bought another, it's a great car!'...engine died on the MOT test, Vauxhall Frontera...same as above.

The bodywork looks very clean so that is a good sign that the owner looked after it. Hope the engine and sus[pension etc. is as good. Sometimes you do get a bargain because the seller just needs it gone and can't be bothered with people arriving then haggling the price down. I won't ask how much but there is nothing worse when selling a car privately, than someone coming to buy the car at below market price, then trying to get more money off as well.

That is hideous, and thats coming from someone who is commuting at present in a Fiat Punto Sporting (2007 to make it worse).

The Fiat has got four teenagers through their licences and has been my 'dog' car for the last year (he doesnt fit in Z4 and wife wont let him in her co car), it has needed a starter motor and a clutch in 50k of hard/terrible driving (plus normal servicing).

For a while now I've been rebuilding an Audi Avant V6 in the same colour as my coupe, required was all the work usually needed to get a car back on the road after a decade of lying idle.....belts, new injection system due to varnishing, fuel pump, filters , full engine flush. I also wanted to fit an S2 front bumper and change the normal 15" alloys as the tyres were square anyway. I played with a few ideas on alloy colour settling on silver as the darker colours look too aftermarket, I needed to replace the front left wing too and respray various areas of the car.
I managed to get it MOT'd first time round on Friday, so now just waiting for the V5 (which I thought I had, but no...) and on the road and can keep the similarly coloured coupe company.

And later.....plus a nice E36 328i M-sport convertible I found locally with low miles. Non working roof. Boot won't open. Turns out guy had stuffed his cricket and golf gear in the tiny boot and dislodged the soft top motor, this in turn deactivated the switch for the boot and a catch 22 situation.....need to open the boot to open the roof, need to open the roof to open the boot. So after cutting through the ski-hatch in the back seat only to find the access to the two 10mm lock bolt blocked by all his sporting crap I was forced to remove the rear number plate, cut a flap into the boot, undo the locking mechanism and mig up the flap once I had reset the roof a few times to be sure. Oh yeah.....I fitted MV's to the BMW and a set of (very expensive) Elipsoid lights to the Avant.....can you beleive that parts for these are so dammed expensive? An S2/V6 Coupe front bumper.....£400/500....Elipsoids, £400, Crazy!

Supposed to drop it all off but I'll ask them. They said 'just leave it outside the garage'......

You’ve put a lot of work and presumably money into the Audi and the BMW Me but I’m wondering if it wouldn’t be better to put the same amount of work into cars with a higher ceiling price, like an S2 or an M3. For the same amount of effort I’d have thought that the value added would be more.

Not really....the margins are not that far apart....I have higher value cars such as the E36 Alpina B3 but in all honesty I won't make any more money on that than I will on the convertible. A lot of the time I'm buggering about with my own stuff, for myself, so the time spent is written off, but then I get the odd car such as the Datsun Roadster which I traded up to and owes me a fraction of the ten grand selling price.....win some lose some. I just sold my E55 AMG and Santorini E36 328i M-Sport coupe at break even money, but made it up (to the same client) on my E30 318iS quite healthily. I am never going to get rich, but as long as I can pay the bills and play with my toys I'm happy.

I put the Datsun out there tentatively on FB and had a few calls about arranging viewings but no one bothered to call to make a firm appointment, so no worries, I'm not in a rush to sell that. The Alpina is on the market and I hope to use the cash for the GT500 Shelby....finish the small patches and get it running and hopefully back to the states to sell. Sold my E30/E36 Santorini and e55 AMG, and was trying to buy a swb Pajero from up north....but get this.....two pajero's....one 1995 one 2007, Both SWB....Both within 10 miles of each other in N/W Yorkshire...both on eBay and both won't answer their phones or emails. I also emailed a guy in Birmingham about an Abarth Stilo and got no response, then offered a guy full whack for a Jag 1998 XKE only to have it sell out before he got my message...I swear someone's hijacking my bloody emails or something. I mean it's not like the phones are in lockdown. FFS! What a waste of advertising if they don't bloody respond! Plan is now to buy a Mini Cooper S JCW 200 R53 and a EP3 Honda Civic Type R instead now.

Sigh.

This morning I came this close <squeezes thumb and index finger together> to trading the Rolf for an R8 V10 Plus.

Mrs 66 talked me out of it. And she was right, damn her!

I am going to push her down the stairs. Out of spite. I hate it when she is right. Especially at my expense.

Umm, yeah. And i have no plans to get rid of it.

manfromdelmonte wrote:What was the reasoning?

Hmm. Well, it really boiled down to this.

“What the fcuk are you going to do with two two-seater massively expensive ridiculously fast cars, you fcuking idiot? You hardly have time to drive the one you have! Let alone the other car you have! That fcuking Golf sits there all week doing nothing!”

“No, I use the Golf a lot”

“What for?”

“Pottering about?”

“Oh fcuking hell! So you want a V10 missile to ‘potter about’. Don’t be so fcuking stupid”

“But I really *want* it”.

And then she left the room.

It kinda became the sort of turd even I couldn’t polish. Because not that deep down I knew I didn’t have a leg to stand on. The best I had would have been to suggest keeping the Golf and notching up to three cars. And that is an ambitious proposition given my starting point.

Yeah, tbh Gregg it’s sounding like she’s in rather a strong negotiating position here. If you’d suggested swapping the AM for the R8 or could put a strict time limit on your potential R8 ownership then you’d have a stronger position.

Greggers, I’m in a bit of a similar situation with the TVR and I’m genuinely struggling with a decision.

We have the TVR and the Golf R parked on our drive and we pay a neighbour to park the Polo on her drive though this is about to stop due to changes in parking regs on our road. I have suggested to Mr C that we sell the Polo as we don’t really need two cars any more. We’d get a couple of grand for it but ultimately it would save us a few £££ per year.

He suggested selling the TVR too. He loves it (probably more than I do, truth be told), but it’s about to cost us another couple of grand, which it does every 3-4 years, and I’m at this point feeling a bit weary of it. The thing that’s stopped me selling before now is that it’s a genuinely good car without many of the usual TVR issues and it’s appreciated quite a lot since I bought it.

That would be a shame Clown. If it gives you pleasure and you can afford the maintenance (which doesn’t sound crazily expensive given it’s a hand built British car) and it’s not a depreciating asset then why sell it? Unless Mr C has something else in mind I suppose. Sports cars can look less attractive as winter approaches but come next spring it’ll look different again.
