8 dead

Post by tanglerat @ Mon Jul 12, 2010 11:10 pm

Suppose you've got a VW Passat. Suppose you're a young lad, late teens/early twenties. Suppose you've been in the pub with your mates watching the World Cup final. Suppose afterwards they ask you for a lift home. Or wherever. How many of you do you suppose you can fit into the Passat?

Eight, apparently.

So suppose you're driving along with yourself and 7 mates. What's the chances of having an accident with a Renault Megane? How far do you think you'll get if you don't stop at the scene?

600 yards, apparently, before you pile into a Toyota Corolla?

Wonder how many will die?

Well, the driver of the other car. And all seven of your mates. You'll just be seriously injured.

Eight dead. Makes you weep

Idiots. I did once manage to fit 10 people into my old Micra (1989, my first car) - but that was stationary, with the keys out, and simply because we were bored.

Cars handle differently with even a couple of passengers on board (which isn't touched upon at DSA level) - my guess would be either it's understeered... or one of the assembled pillocks has distracted or bashed the driver with a stray limb.

Terrible.

Question: is drink driving still socially acceptable in Ireland? Over here I genuinely think it's crossed the line into something that one just doesn't do. But pretty much every day there's a news story about some bad crash in Ballyloony...

Why is everyone assuming drunk driving?

Article wrote:Both cars ended up in a ditch and alcohol was not a factor in the crash, gardai said.

Knowing what some of the roads over there are like, an overloaded car could have easily bounced out of control if going too quick for the road.

My first reaction. Then I thought, I've done the same, 20 or more years ago and in the same general area. But then I thought again, Clearly either we were lucky idiots or these were unlucky ones.

Fcuksake, I was supposed to be on that road on Saturday, till I changed my plans.

And it's not like it's unprecedented down that way:

Irish Times wrote:Inishowen has seen a number of multiple fatality road crashes in recent years. Five young local people were killed in a crash near Quigley’s Point in 2005 and five eastern Europeans died in a two-car crash near Buncrana in 2006.

DD is a big no-no here. Limits are even more stringent than the UK.

The road state is a good call. I wouldn't be at all surprised if that had a major bearing.

But that doesn't explain/excuse why the fcuk he didn't stop when he hit the first car. 600 yards between collisions!

Shock? you can go into autopilot & keep driving for a bit in those circumstances. I've had a near miss on the bike where I'd swear I stopped within a few hundred yards, riding the road again I realised I stopped about 5miles later with no memory of riding that five miles.

I reckon he hit the first one though, "Oh shit, Ive got 8 folk in my car, Im screwed! Go go go!"
booted it to get away, lost control and smashed into car number 2.

Yeah but, all eight of them in the Passat going into shock at the same time? Or legging it to hit and run?

I bet I know people directly affected by this. It's a bit over the way, and I haven't heard yet, but I just bet I know someone who's just lost a loved one.

Yes, I know.

But.... Driving standards in the Irish republic are shocking. I mean, really, really, shocking.

It's absolutely no surprise to me, especially given the state of the roads out there.

I had more near death experiences in 1 day of riding out there than I've had in several years of riding on the mainland.

Must be you Steve, I found it pretty safe. Except for they all seemed to drive too fast for the state of the roads but after a few days so did I, so it must just be being used to it.

Some... Not all.

The problems start when those mentioned above encounter Father Jack doing 25mph in his 30 year old Fester when they've just come over a blond crest at 80mph.

And yes, I know that's a stereotype, but it's a stereotype because it's true.

Driving standards have improved a lot here over the last few years, back in the early 1990s the death & serious RTA were just above Portugal and Greece but worse than France and Italy IIRC, recently they are better than the European average. Better cars and roads and changes in the law have contributed.
[O/T]Spooks me a bit to think about it but a good few years ago I went to see some friends who were in a band play down in West Cork and there was a party in the woods afterwards, I was going to head back to Cork with my girlfriend, but the guy who was driving the group out to the party was staggering drunk so they asked if I could drive this Suzuki supercarry (Bedford rascal-a-like) instead. I agreed and there must have been about seven of us piled in and headed off up a narrow single track road into the hills, on one sharp corner with adverse camber the thing lurched probably onto three wheels, which scared the crap out of me, but I managed to get there safely[/O/T]

When I used to live in Ireland people still used binder twine (from hay bales) to fix their cars (usually on the way home from having 8 pints at the pub), then the law changed so they had to do an MOT and the state of cars improved dramatically. One good thing was that speed tended to be kept low by all the potholes...and the potholes between those potholes (I expect with no money left for public services these will be making quite a comeback now).

Really the Passat is strictly a 5+1 as the boot just doesn’t have enough space for any more.

I’ve always been a bit confused about this anti-drink driving sentiment, seems a strange and irrational hang-up. Apparently other distractions like texting while driving impair motorists to a greater extent (according to research).

Hey, a resurrection! Pity the eight dead can't be as easily brought back, eh?

The aftermath

Swings and roundabouts here. He gains sympathy with victims' families speaking up for him, and he's brain injured, but it turns out his driving record is not entirely unblemished.....

Thankfully, none of mine were involved.

I know a cousin of the driver, he (driver) has known since it happened that he would be getting jailed for this.
